Frequently Asked Questions
- Why don't I connect at 56k?
- What can I do about busy signals?
56k Connections
When dialing in to our 56k modems
or
(416)369-1535
you may notice that your computer tells you that you connect at 28,800
bps or below, even though you have a 56k or v.90 modem. This does not
always indicate a bad connection, but when it does it can be caused
by a number of things:
Your phone line may not be capable of 56k speeds. This is common in
older parts of town with not-so-great phone lines.
Depending on your modem and operating system, the speed it shows that
you're connected at may not always be accurate. The best gauge of actual
connect speed is to download a large file from the Web or an FTP site
and watch the transfer speed it shows you. This will be about as accurate
as you can get.
Busy Signals
Busy signals come in two flavors: slow and fast. A slow busy signal
means the location you're calling is busy. A fast busy signal means
all circuits are busy and Bell Canada cannot complete the call. Even
if we have a hundred free modems and phone lines, if the switching failed
we can't be held responsible. The call didn't get to us. From time to
time Bell Canada has problems from a particular location to other particular
locations.
The best way to avoid busy signals is to try alternate numbers. Our
phone numbers for 56K V.90 Access is (416)369-1522
or
